Earning Money From Crowdsourcing

Crowdsourcing

My previous post on this subject discussed the benefits of crowdsourcing for businesses and entrepreneurs.  This post provides information for individuals that want to benefit from crowdsourcing.  Some of the benefits include earning money,  to win business, winning a contest, to get perks, and more.  Below are a few of the best crowdsourcing websites along with a brief description of each.  To learn more, click on the provided link.

99Designs - currently has over 265, 000 designers ready to design logos, web design, and more.  Other projects include business card design, mobile app design, t-shirt design, banner ad design, book cover design, art & illustration. Signing up as a designer requires no previous experience and is free.  Once you join, you will have access to over 1500 projects worth over $500,000 at any one time.

CastingWords  - provides transcription services.  Can you type quickly and accurately? Maybe transcription work is your thing. To participate, you have to sign up with Mechanical Turk (see description below) where CastingWords posts all of their jobs. You can search for CastingWords to see their specific assignments. You are paid through a bank transfer to a U.S. account or you can opt to receive Amazon.com store credit.

Clickworker - is a German based crowd labor site that boasts to have 450,000 workers in 136 countries speaking 30 languages.  You get paid to provide writing, translation, research, data processing and search engine optimization. You can work for this site if you're in a SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) country or have a valid PayPal account.  Before you start as a Clickworker, you have to qualify for the task you’ve chosen to work on, including a base assessment and a project assessment. Some scoring to assess your skills will happen automatically while others will require manual review from the company.

Cloudcrowd - work includes editing, reviewing and translating documents, data entry, image processing, Internet research, content creation, and merchandising products. You need a Facebook account to work for them and a PayPal account to get paid.

Crowdflower -  is one of the industry leaders in providing crowdsourced solutions. Unlike some of the other crowdsourcing companies, CrowdFlower does not operate it's own platform. Instead, tasks are published on partner websites. Earnings grow and are paid by the partnered websites.  Jobs are designated as Mini-jobs or Mini-tasks or just Tasks.   You may have to become a member of Crowdflower and login (via the partner website) to complete the tasks.  Some of the websites that I belong to that partner with Crowdflower are Neobux, Probux and Clixsense. A list of Crowdflower partners can be found here.

Crowdspring - is definitely the go-to site for companies looking for the largest marketplace for logos, graphics, graphic design, and even naming. Crowdspring.com currently has over 146,000 talented designers and writers which serve the role of active participants in projects. Joining as a "creative" is free and opens the door to many design and writing projects.  Of course you will have to compete with others, but if your work as selected the pay can be substantial.

Kickstarter - is a crowdsourcing funding website that serves as a platform for professionals like designers, writers, musicians, filmmakers, and inventors alike. Projects are solely created by the people behind each results presented upon deadline. Talents have complete control and responsibility over their projects, thus they are guaranteed offers for jobs well done. A project creator will set the price as well as the deadline. A project that is successful means that adequate funds will be available from all backers. A failed project on the other hand will not be funded by the creator or backers. Talents who are interested in trying their hand at creative projects need to meet general guidelines before staring a project.

Mechanical Turk - is one of the most popular websites that facilitates crowdsourcing and is one of Crowdflowers partner platforms. The website is owned and run by Amazon.  After signing up, participants click on tasks or projects that they want to work on. The tasks which are featured are simple and very straightforward such as answering surveys, commenting on blogs, rewriting jobs, image labeling, and even simple micro tasks as well. The payment system is straightforward in that payment for work done is directly forwarded to your Amazon payments account. You won't get rich quick, but the tasks and projects can become addicting.

oDesk - may be right for you if you have experience in any of the following: web development, software development, networking & information systems, writing and translation, administrative support, design & multimedia, customer service, sales and marketing, and business services.  After signing up for free, you can interview for freelance jobs in the categories above.  If you get a job and get paid, oDesk charges a fee equivalent to 10% of the total amount charged to your client. For example, if your rate is $18 per hour, oDesk charges an extra $2 so that your client pays a total of $20 per hour.

If you search the Internet, you will find many more inviting  websites.  To help you get started I have included a list below.

CrowdSourcing

Crowdsourcing is the idea of outsourcing work, usually online, to a group or crowd of people. "Crowdsourcing"  is a combination of the words 'crowd' and 'outsourcing'.  The principle behind this concept is that more heads are better than one for any given project.  By using crowds of people, generation of ideas, skills, and quality of content is usually superior resulting in a better product. A great example of this was the creation of the most comprehensive encyclopedia in the world, Wikipedia.

Crowdsourcing has five major forms (listed below). Each form involves a crowdsourcer or manager, a crowdmarket and a crowd of people. By choosing the right form of crowdsourcing, you can manage large jobs with thousands of workers or do small jobs that require just a single person. You can create jobs that you carefully monitor and control, or you can let the crowd organize itself and decide how it should do the work.

1.  Crowdcontests - can be used for graphic design, answering questions, testing software, creating films and other creative projects.  For example, say you’re looking for a book cover design, you can solicit a crowd of cover designers and tell them what you want, how much you will pay, and when you need to have it done.  All interested designers will create a finished book cover specifically for you. You’ll receive dozens of different book cover designs, and you can use whichever design you like the best. By doing design this way, you get better quality at a reduced cost, compared to hiring one person.

2. Macrotasks - enable you to get a specific skill for a job or project.  This way you can hire people (a team) from the crowd to work on a single project or task.  Workers communicate over the Internet and are paid by project.  This type of crowdsourcing works good for general business work, web and other forms of design, assistance with writing and editing, and application development.

3. Microtasks - involves breaking large jobs up into tiny tasks and sending the work to a crowd of people. For example microtasks could involve transcribing business cards, medical  records (or other documents), tagging photos and finding business information. Work is done faster, cheaper, and usually with less errors (when validation systems are in place).

4. Crowdfunding - This idea involves asking a crowd of people to donate money to your project. Some examples are getting support for non-profit organizations, raising funds for artistic endeavors, getting cash to companies by offering goods or services, and raising equity for a company.  You find an appropriate crowdfunding platform (site that offers the service you are looking for), set the amount of money, the deadline, and any rewards offered to donors. If 100% of the donations are not raised by the deadline, all money is returned to the donors.  Crowdfunding is mostly used by artists, charities, & start-ups to raise money for their projects.

5. Self-organized crowds - Sometimes call Open Innovation, here the crowd organizes itself into teams.  The teams compete to provide the best answer to a challenge.  The winning team is compensated and decides how it is to be divided.  Self-organized crowds are good for creating new products or services, finding and collecting information, processing information and offering judgement, and solving challenges. This type of crowdsourcing can bring people together from different parts of the world and different sectors of business to work together on a project. This is effectively a collection of different fields and levels of expertise that would not otherwise be available to any budding entrepreneur.

Although crowdsourcing provides many ways for businesses and entrepreneurs to get work done  at a reasonable cost and with better results, it also provides earning opportunities for those wanting to become part of the "crowd."  In a follow-up post I am going to discuss ways to earn online by becoming part of the croudsourcing community.

A Practical Neobux Strategy (Part III - Managing Your Account as a Free Member)

Part I - Ways to Earn
Part II - Expenses

After registering and before clicking on ads there are a few things you need to do.  First, make sure to read and understand the Terms of Service (TOS).  There are restrictions on the use of Neobux and you certainly would not want your account suspended down the road because you did no abide by the terms.  Second, take the time to review your personnel information.  Make sure to update your payment processor, so that you can get paid.  Third, make sure that you have a good virus detector installed on your computer. Fourth, just click around to get familiar with where everything is.  Read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), the help page and spend some time on the forum.  Finally, look for and be aware of when your advertisement clicks are reset every day.  You can find the time on the View Advertisements page.

Earning money on Neobux is really quite simple.  You click on ads, view them for the required time and Neobux credits your account with the value of the ad.  When you accumulate enough money you can rent referrals.  You earn more when your referrals click on ads. If you want to sign-up direct referrals, you must qualify first.  That is, you must view a least 100 ads and be active for 15 days.  You will get credit for all the ads that you view and you should have enough earnings to buy your first referral pack (3 @ $0.20 each) within the first month. The process is slow in the beginning, but be patient as the process speeds up as you go along.

There are many different types of ads and in the beginning it is important that you click on all of them to build up your earnings.  The 4 golden ads are the most important.  Clicking on these ads is required for you to get earnings from your referrals clicks.  When you click on the golden ads, you get credit for your referrals clicks the next day.    This is important because your referrals earn you $.005 for every golden ad they click on and view compared to $.001 that you earn when viewing your own golden ads.  As you can see, the more money you earn, the more referrals you can rent, the more earnings you accumulate.  The process goes on and on until you reach limits based on your membership status (more on this later).

Referrals are rented on a 30 day basis and must be maintained daily or renewed every 30 days.  One way to maintain them (recommended for free members) is to turn the Autopay feature to "on."   Essentially, what happens is that soon as a referral makes their first click of the day, you will be charged a daily rate to extend them one extra day.   So, they actually pay for themselves each day they are active.  If a referral does not click you won't pay for that day, but you will own that referral for one less day.  If the remaining days fall below 20, Autopay is automatically iturned off and you will have to renew that referral when the 30 days are up.  If everything goes according to the way it is supposed to work there should be no problem earning money from referrals.  When a referral clicks on at least the 4 golden ads you make $0.02 for that day.  That times 30 days gives you $0.60 - $020 (rental cost) = $0.40 or 200% profit for each referral.

If this all sounds too good to be true, well, it is.  The reality is that your referrals are not going to click on ads everyday.  Referrals that click 4 golden ads a day would give them a perfect average.  Actually, if your referrals click at 1.8 average per day or better that would be considered good. So, what you need to know and watch closely is your break even point (BEP).  This holds true no matter what level your membership. Below are several charts showing discount rates, total costs to extend referrals, cost per day applying discounts, and break even points.  The longer you extend, the  higher the discount and therefore, the lower the BEP.

First, the discounts for referral renewals:

AutoPay15 days30 days60 days90 days150 days240 days
15%0%5%10%18%25%30%

Total cost to extend:
Referrals     Autopay  15 days  30 days  60 days  90 days  150 days  240 days
0-250            N/A         .10         .19          .36          .49           .75            1.12
251-300        N/A          .11         .20         .38          .52           .79             1.26

Cost per day applying discounts:
Referrals     Autopay  15 days  30 days  60 days  90 days  150 days  240 days
0-250           .0057        .0067     .0063    .0060     .0054     .0050       .0047
251-300       .0059        .0070     .0067    .0063     .0057      .0053       .0049

This is the same chart as above, but in terms of clicks (BEP):
 Referrals     Autopay  15 days  30 days  60 days  90 days  150 days  240 days
0-250             1.14         1.34       1.26        1.20       1.08         1.00         .94
251-300          1.18        1.40       1.34        1.26       1.14          1.06         .98

To get your BEP for any given day, go to the stats page and look for the chart called "Rented referrals clicks credited."  Hover your mouse over any day and it will show you how many clicks were made.  Divide that number by the number of referrals and you have the average amount of clicks for that day.  For instance: 88 clicks/60 referrals = 1.47 average.  This would be a profitable day with Autopay on since the BEP from the chart above shows 1.14 to break even.

As a free member, it is difficult to break even.  Especially, when you get over 90 referrals.  Those referrals that have not clicked everyday are not going to pay for themselves and will have to be renewed eventually.  If you extend for longer periods of time to save money then you won't be able to buy as many referrals every week.  So, what do you do?  As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, there are several ways to earn and in the beginning you should do some of the other things to help build up your earnings.  When you upgrade, your referrals clicks will be worth twice as much and you won't have to spend as much time doing the other things.  Below is a chart showing approximately how long it takes per day to earn with the different methods.

View golden ads (required)     1-2 min
View other ads                         8-9 min
View Adprize ads                     10-12 min
Do Mini Jobs                           45 min - 1 hour and 30 min
View videos (Neocoins)           5 - 10 minutes
Neopoint offers                        unlimited
Neocoin offers                         unlimited

In my opinion, after viewing the required golden ads you should spend your time viewing the rest of your ads and then do the Mini Jobs every day with any extra time you have.  Doing so will give you extra money to rent referrals and to extend existing ones.  There is a 300 rented referral limit for free members.  So, to keep things moving I suggest that free members extend for no more than 30 days at a time.

Next let's talk about what to do with referrals that are not doing their part to help you to at least break even.  Facts show that 20 to 30 percent of rented referrals are not going break even.  This means you are losing money on them.  There are many opinions on how long to wait  and whether or not you should pay to recycle.

Neobux allows you to recycle (replace an existing referral with a new one) any time you want for a fee of $0.07.  Otherwise, you can wait and they will give you a free recycle after 15 days of inactivity. So, what to do?  Let's say that everything is going well and your referral's overall average is 1.8 clicks or $0.009 a day.   Now let's say that you rent a referral and they don't click for the first 5 days and you are thinking about paying the $0.07 to recycle.  If you do, you are paying $0.27 for that referral for the first 30 days.  If the same referral clicks at an average of 1.8 for the next 25 days, you will make $0.225 for a net loss of  $0.27 - $0.225 = $0.045.   Instead, if you wait 15 days for a free recycle you loose $0.10 or half of the monthly rent of $0.20.  Providing the new referral clicks at the rate of 1.8 for the remaining days you will make $0.135 for a net loss of  $0.20 - $0.135 = $0.065.

There are other factors that play into this and each members situation may be different.  For instance, is Autopay on or off?  Was the referral extended for a long period of time?  Is the click rate average higher or lower than the examples?  Do you have extra money to recycle?  The bottom line here is that you must pay attention to what your referrals are doing and take steps to keep the click average as high as possible. Once you reach 100 rented referrals, start extending them for 90 days or more until all of them are on an extended cycle or longer.  Once they are, turn Autopay off.  Then, start an aggressive recycle program  following the chart below (suggested on the Neobux forum):

Inactivity         Click Rate
3 - 4 days          <=0.8
5 - 7 days          <=1.3
8 - 10 days        <=2.0

Recycle each rented referral (per above chart) no more than once a month as a free member. This may mean less money each week to rent new referrals, but the above approach should put you at break even or better.  Finally, do not upgrade until you have rented the maximum of 300 referrals and have a good extension and recycle plan in place.

A Practical Neobux Strategy (Part II - Expenses)

Part I - Ways to Earn
Part III - Managing Your Account as a Free Member

As with any business opportunity, expenses play a big role in whether or not your are going to show a profit.  So, it is paramount that you understand what your expenses are and how to minimize them.  As far as Neobux goes, expenses revolve around renting and maintaining referrals, and upgrades.  The last part of this series deals with managing your account.  So, in this post I'll just discuss what kind of expenses that you may encounter on a daily basis.

Referrals - The goal with Neobux is to max out your rented and direct referrals.  To be honest, you are not going to make much money without them.  When you click on your required ads each day and your referrals click on their ads, you get paid for both. One thing to keep in mind is that your rented referrals make you $.005 every time they click on a golden ad while you make $.001 when you click.

The number of rented referrals that each user can have is relative to his/her type of membership/pack as follows:
 Standard
 Golden
 Emerald
 Platinum
 Sapphire
 Diamond
 Ultimate
300200020002000250030004000

Next, let's talk about what referrals cost to rent and maintain.  By the way, direct referrals don't cost anything, but you will have to figure out how to get them on your own. To begin, rented referrals initially cost $0.20 cents for 30 days.  After the first month, the cost to to initially rent them or extend them depends on two things.  That is, how many referrals you have and how much longer you want to keep them. The quantity of  total available referrals on a daily basis varies and depends on how many users registered without a referrer. To qualify, referrals must have clicked on least 11 advertisements in the past 5 days.

The rental price for each referral per month is:
ReferralsMonthlyAutoPay
0 -> 250$0.20$0.0057
251 -> 500$0.21$0.0060
501 -> 750$0.22$0.0062
751 -> 1000$0.23$0.0065
1001 -> 1250$0.24$0.0068
1251 -> 1500$0.25$0.0071
1501 -> 1750$0.26$0.0074
more than 1750$0.27$0.0077

There are ways to cut the expense down for referral extensions. One way is to extend them for more than 15 days. The renewal price is always based on the monthly rental prices shown above and you can benefit from the following discounts depending on the renewal period you choose:
AutoPay15 days30 days60 days90 days150 days240 days
15%0%5%10%18%25%30%

Autopay  - You can activate AutoPay to extend your referrals' next payment date.  On the first click each referral makes per day on the required ads, you'll pay to keep him/her for an extra day according to the above chart.  This is a fast, easy and inexpensive way to keep your referrals.  The catch here is that if your referral's renewal time falls to 20 days or less the Autopay feature will be turned off for that referral.

Recycling - You can recycle each referral any time you want to. If your referral is inactive or just clicks a few advertisements per day you can replace him/her with a new active referral.  The cost is $0.07.  Neobux also offers free recycling for any referral that does not click on an ad for 15 days.

AutoRenew is the automatic renewal process of your rented referrals.  AutoRenew works every day and prolongs your referral's deadline based on your chosen renewal period and time before expiration.

Before enabling AutoRenew, the two following options will be given:
  • Period: This will be the exact period for which the referral's rental will be extended. You can choose any of the usual manual renewal periods (15, 30, 60, 90, 150, and 240 days) to receive the benefit from the related discounts for each period (except for the 15 days one).
  • Before: The time before the expiration when the automated renewal will be triggered. You can choose any of the available number of days and your referrals will be extended if the rental deadline is the same or below the chosen number of days.
Upgrades - There are two kinds of memberships, Standard and Golden.  Once you upgrade to Golden there are 5 additional "Golden Packs" you can purchase.  A one year golden membership costs $90 dollars. The main features of going golden are shown below.

In addition, the amount of direct referrals you can have goes from 30 to 200.  These can be increased further depending on how many days you've been registered, all those days, minus the first 30, will count towards a limit increase. This means that the older the member you are, the more referrals you can have.  The amount will be based on your current membership/pack and the days you're registered (minus 30). This amount will vary and is explained below:
  • Standard/Pioneer = Days-30 divided by 4
  • Golden (without a pack) = Days-30 divided by 2
  • Golden (with a pack) = Days-30
For example, if you have been registered for 330 days (which minus 30 gives 300 days):
  • Standard= 30 + (300/4) = 105
  • Golden = 200 + (300/2) = 350

After upgrading to golden, there are 5 other upgrades or packs.  The chart below shows the upgrade types, features and costs.
